weather channel's jim cantore live for us in mobile and joins us now. obviously, the sun is out and completely different now but explain why the monster system brought such a different batch of unexpected weather to certain places. >> reporter: well, we haven't had any big cold air masses in the east. so, you know, unless the gulf which is our fuel source is cooled off by a cold front, we can just take it as much as we want and that's what this storm did. came down, scooped up moisture, got warm and the jet stream came over and tornadoes that caused damage. this is a parish here, this is a an episcopal church. looking at the roof damage. you see a couple pieces of roof gone. that's not too bad. look how massive the church is and the top layer here, completely twisted by the tornado. all right? so that's going to have to be removed and rebuilt in through here. trees, power lines, damaged throughout mobile. we may have a four to five-mile path here but alabama power have been out all evening and morning getting some 40,000 people back online. 40,000. thin

she joins us now from honolulu. hey, kristen. the president and the speaker are still sounding optimistic. is this wishful thinking? what exactly are you hearing in honolulu? >> well, i think that hopes for getting some type of grand bargain have all been but dashed. the most realistic thing right now is they can work out some sort of stop gap measure, a smaller deal. you heard president obama signal that on friday when he addressed the nation. he talked about the fact that members of congress right now should just focus on making sure that taxes don't go up on middle class americans and extend unemployment insurance, so i think right now both sides are just trying to prevent going over the fiscal cliff, and then they will aim to tackle some of the larger issues after the first of the year. president obama referring to this as a working vacation. i'm also told that there are conversations going on at the staff level, but we expect sort of the bulk of the work to get done when lawmakers return to washington after the christmas hol
